Porcupines are rodents, just like mice, rats and beavers and can have up to 30,000 quills when fully grown. Their quills are thicker, longer, sharper versions of normal mammal hair
Porcupines are born with soft quills that harden a few hours after birth. They use their quills as a defence by charging backwards into their enemy. Their quills were once used as fishing floats.
Porcupines can live alone, in pairs or in groups. Porcupines can have up to four babies at a time; these are cared for by both parents.
