Our 'Mystic Meerkats' were proved uncannily accurate on Wednesday after correctly predicting England's victory over DR Congo – even forecasting the early scare that had fans fearing the worst before the Three Lions eventually won.

Now the football-fixture-predicting mob are back with their latest World Cup forecast ahead of England's Round of 16 match against Mexico in the early hours of Monday. But while they're once again backing England, like the majority of football pundits, they believe this one won't be easy. With Mexico's passionate home support, the challenge of playing at altitude, and an opponent determined to make home advantage count to contend with.

As always, the prediction involved placing two buckets in their habitat filled with black crickets, which, perhaps surprisingly, are irresistible treats for the meerkats! Each bucket is decorated with one team's flag, and the one that attracts the biggest gathering of meerkats is declared the predicted winner.

This time, one meerkat immediately headed for the Mexico bucket, suggesting England could face a difficult evening. However, after taking a closer look, the rest of the mob made a decisive charge towards the England bucket, gathering there in overwhelming numbers.

Unlike their prediction against DR Congo, though, the Mexico bucket continued to attract attention throughout, with several meerkats repeatedly returning to inspect it and one even climbing into it! If their behaviour is anything to go by, England may have enough to edge through, but they'll have to work much harder for it.

Keeper Dulce Bextor, said: "The meerkats got the DR Congo result absolutely spot on. One headed to the opposition bucket first before the rest piled into England, which felt remarkably similar to how the match played out, with that early scare before England took control.

"This time they were clearly interested in the Mexico bucket as well as the England one and kept going back to it throughout. One even climbed in, which isn't something we usually see when they're really confident.

"They still chose England, but if the meerkats are right, this feels like it'll be a much tougher night. Playing Mexico in front of their own fans, at altitude, is a huge challenge for any team. England may well find a way through, but it certainly doesn't look like it'll be straightforward. Good luck England, you’ve got this!"

The Mystic Meerkats first shot to fame during the delayed Euros in 2021 and enhanced their reputation during UEFA Euro 2024 by correctly predicting every England result right through to the final.
