Banded Mongoose

Mungos mungo

About the Banded Mongoose

Banded mongooses have a grey-brown coat, a black tipped tail and dark bands across their back. Banded mongooses throw eggs and snails into stones with their back legs to break them. When a predator approaches, they bunch together and move as a group, creating the appearance of a single large animal.

Habitat and Distribution

Banded mongooses live in grasslands and scrubby forests in sub-Saharan Africa.

Family Information

These are a very social species and can live in groups of up to 40 at a time. They will fight other groups of mongooses though when they meet them.
